Gunns owns approximately 185,000 hectares of land in Tasmania in many holdings across Tasmania, of which the largest are in the northwest of the state. This estate is managed primarily for wood production, and approximately 110,000 hectares is now established as plantation. However extensive areas are voluntarily reserved for a variety of values, such as endangered species (eg.ptunarra butterfly) forest type (such as rainforest) and visual impact.

As part of the AFS certification process, Gunns has developed a process of consultation with stakeholder groups with respect to its management of this extensive estate, and its impact on the surrounding communities. The outcome of this process is the attached document. Comment on this document is welcome.

A range of indicators were developed for each of the nine criteria requirements of the AFS. Some of the indicators include targets that Gunns aims to achieve, while for other indicators, targets are not applicable. The indicators cover Gunns Permanent Estate (land Gunns owns – freehold) or total Gunns Managed Area (freehold and private property for which Gunns has management control in regards to forest management). Information regarding total areas managed under these classifications is summarised in the section Current Forest Statistics. Each indicator is monitored on a financial year.

The Sustainable Management report covers the results of the indicators on a financial year basis. It demonstrates a commitment of the Company to increase public reporting and foster participation in forest management performance. Feedback, comments and suggestions in relation to this report are welcomed.
