Gunns maintains
its own research facility, which carries out testing and research
into a range of issues relating to the production of high quality
fibre from natural and plantation forests, as well as providing
advice on forest management, quality control and environmental issues.
The company's laboratory has very high technical standards,
being the only one working in this particular field approved by
NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities Australia).
In addition Gunns has been actively involved in Cooperative Research
Centres (CRC's) since they were set up by the Federal Government
in the 1980's. Gunns is currently a core member of the Cooperative
Research Centre for Sustainable Production Forestry headquartered
in Hobart. Gunns supports the CRC with annual cash contributions
and the provision of in-kind support, including providing land for
research trials and access for CRC researchers to Gunns' own tree
breeding and nutritional trials. The CRC has provided training for
many young Australian scientists and significantly contributed to
the scientific knowledge about Eucalypts. Technology developed by
the CRC is applied to maintaining the sustainability of Gunns' forestry
operations.
